JEE Main Registration: Complete Guide to the Application Form for Session 1 and Session 2
Every JEE aspirant needs to complete the JEE Main registration process twice across two sessions. This guide walks through the complete JEE Main application form process, from account creation to fee payment.
JEE Main registration is the first step every aspiring engineer must complete before appearing in the exam. NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts JEE Main in two sessions each year. Each session requires a separate registration through the official portal jeemain.nta.nic.in. Missing a registration deadline or making an error in the JEE Main application form can cause serious problems, so understanding the full process before you begin is essential.
JEE Main Session 1 and Session 2
JEE Main is held twice a year. Session 1 typically takes place in January and Session 2 in April. Both sessions are independent exams. The better of your two scores is considered for rank calculation.
Exact dates vary each year. Always verify the current schedule on jeemain.nta.nic.in. The table above shows approximate timelines based on previous years.
Registering for Session 1 does NOT automatically register you for Session 2. You must register separately for JEE Mains Session 2 if you want to attempt both.
Step-by-Step: How to Fill the JEE Main Application Form
The JEE Main application form is entirely online. There is no offline process. Here is the complete sequence:
- Go to jeemain.nta.nic.in and click on the JEE Main registration link for the relevant session.
- Create a new account by entering your name, date of birth, mobile number, and email ID. You will receive an OTP to verify both.
- Log in with your application number and password. Fill in your personal details including name, parents names, date of birth, gender, category, nationality, and state of eligibility.
- Fill in your academic details including Class 10 and Class 12 board, year of passing or appearing, and subject combination.
- Choose your exam paper (Paper 1 for B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch, Paper 2B for B.Planning, or a combination), preferred exam city, and exam medium.
- Upload your passport-size photograph and scanned signature in the prescribed format and size.
- Pay the application fee through net banking, credit card, debit card, or UPI.
- Print or save the confirmation page after successful payment. This is your proof of registration.
Documents and Information Required
Keep the following ready before you begin filling the JEE exam form. Having everything in place before you start reduces the chance of errors.
- Passport-size photograph (recent, white background, as per NTA specifications)
- Scanned signature on white paper
- Class 10 certificate or mark sheet (for date of birth verification)
- Class 12 mark sheet or admit card (for academic details)
- Aadhaar card or any valid government-issued photo ID
- Category certificate if applicable (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS)
- PwD certificate if applicable
- Active email ID and mobile number (used for all future communication)
Application Fee for JEE Main
The JEE Main application fee varies by category and gender. The table below shows approximate fee amounts based on recent years. Confirm the exact amount on the NTA portal when you register, as fees are revised periodically.
Fee payment is mandatory to complete the JEE main application form process. A form without fee payment is not considered submitted.
JEE Mains Session 2 Registration
JEE Mains Session 2 registration follows the same process as Session 1. If you already registered for Session 1, you will use your existing NTA login credentials. You do not need to create a new account, but you must submit a fresh application form and pay the fee again.
Many students skip Session 2 registration after a bad Session 1 result, which is a mistake. Session 2 is a separate attempt with a fresh paper. Your best score across both sessions counts. Always register for both sessions at the start of the year.
JEE Advanced Registration
JEE Advanced registration is completely separate from JEE Main registration. It is not done on the NTA portal. JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs, and registration is done on the official JEE Advanced website (jeeadv.ac.in).
To be eligible for JEE Advanced registration, you must first qualify JEE Main. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 are eligible to register for JEE Advanced. The eligibility cutoff varies each year by category.
- JEE Advanced registration opens after JEE Main Session 2 results are declared.
- You will need your JEE Main roll number, result, and rank to register.
- Registration involves filling a fresh form on jeeadv.ac.in, uploading documents, and paying a separate registration fee.
- There is a limited registration window, usually 5 to 7 days. Missing it means losing your chance to appear for JEE Advanced that year.
- You must also appear for JEE Advanced in person. There is no exemption for students who registered but did not appear.
Common Mistakes When Filling the JEE Main Form
- Entering the wrong date of birth. This must exactly match your Class 10 board certificate.
- Uploading a photograph that does not meet NTA specifications (wrong file size, coloured background, or wearing spectacles if the guidelines say otherwise).
- Selecting the wrong state of eligibility. This determines which state quota seats you are eligible for in counselling.
- Not double-checking the exam city preference. Once submitted, changes may not be allowed.
- Ignoring the application correction window. NTA usually opens a short window after registration closes where you can fix certain details. Use it if you made an error.
- Forgetting to save or print the confirmation page after fee payment.
After Submitting the JEE Main Application
Once your JEE main application form is successfully submitted and the fee is paid, you will receive a confirmation email and SMS. Keep your application number safe. You will need it to download your admit card, check your result, and register for JEE Advanced.
Your JEE Main admit card is released approximately 2 to 3 weeks before the exam date. Download it from jeemain.nta.nic.in using your application number and password. The admit card contains your exam date, time, shift, and exam centre address. Carry it along with a valid photo ID on exam day.
Registration and preparation are two separate things. Handle the registration well in advance so you can focus entirely on studying without administrative distractions.
